Q What are people talking
about when they refer to?

So What is E-learning?

E-learning is a term that refers to different methods of using technology to deliver training and instructional materials.
E-learning methods range from the use of mainframe computers, radio, television, multimedia CD-ROMs, or DVDs, interactive videos, and web based technology. PDA's (e.g., Palm Pilots) wireless devices like your cell phone, and my personal favorite the i-pod are also being tapped for content delivery in both academic and corporate cultures.

Commonly used acronyms include computer-based training (CBT), computer-based learning (CBL), computer-based instruction (CBI), computer-based education (CBE), Web-based training (WBT), Internet-based training and Intranet-based training (IBT). Distance learning platforms like (e-college, Blackboard, WebCT, and most recently Moodle) are used for instructor-led, web-based education for online classes.

One of the most exciting areas in e-learning today is the creation, sharing and distribution of many open-sourceware tools. With the growing use of Linux for open source programming, you can expect this trend to increase. Currently I use open sourceware such as Moodle for course and learning management systems, Wordpress for blogs and Rsane for content management systems.

At Transformative Designs all e-learning project designs begin with the learner and content in mind, accompanied by the delivery systems. Technology changes frequently, but good instruction is reusable and flexible through a variety of mediums over time. All my projects are developed around the science of understanding how people learn, retain and apply information. The content is edited and formatted towards the needs of all potential users, and delivered through appropriate, stable, and reusable technologies. I have a special interest in utilizing open-sourceware technology whenever possible to deliver content and instruction.
